Maibarara Drills New Geothermal Well in Batangas Philippines

Maibarara Drills New Geothermal Well in Batangas Philippines

Maibarara geothermal well

A Philippine based energy developer, Maibarara Geothermal Inc., started drilling a new geothermal well last Thursday August 30, 2012 on its geothermal energy project in Santo. Tomas, Batangas in the Philippines.

Here's my previous first and second post about this project.

New well to re-inject condensate fluid

The purpose of this well according to Petroenergy Resources Corp. or PERC, Maibarara’s majority stakeholder, is to re-inject condensate fluids from the 20-megawatt geothermal project into a reservoir below ground to recharge the system also located in Santo Tomas.

The re-injection of condensate fluid will help increase the system efficiency which will result to cost efficient energy production.

Geothermal energy system, a renewable energy form, use in most situations the underground steam fields as a source of heat to produce energy – or electricity that we need every day.

Geothermal project expected to be operational in 2013

This news was announced by Maibarara from its Pasig office after it had finished last August the third production well that will also supply steam to the plant. Its Santo Tomas geothermal plant is expected to begin its operation next year.

This projected was started after Maibarara got a 2.4 billion-peso or roughly $57 million loan last September from Bank of the Philippine Islands and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. The loan according to the company will fund the project’s steam field pipeline, power plant and transmission equipment.

Maibarara Geothermal Inc. is a joint project of Trans-Asia Oil & Energy Development Corporation and the government- owned renewable energy unit Philippine National Oil Company.

Makiling Geothermal Project's Sales Pact Signed

I have previously posted an article regarding the 20-megawatt Maibarara geothermal project, a renewable energy source located on the western flank of Mount Makiling at San Pablo, Laguna, Philippines. Well here's an update from Manila Bulletin.

"PetroEnergy Resources Corp. (PERC) has signed an energy sales agreement (ESA) with partner Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp. for the off-take of the generated electricity from the 20-megawatt Maibarara geothermal project, which is targeted to be on stream by September 2013.
This was disclosed by PERC to the Philippine Stock Exchange.
Trans-Asia, a licensed wholesale aggregator in the deregulated power market, has emphasized in a separate disclosure to the local bourse that the ESA “covers a 20-year period.”
The energy sales pact prescribes that “Trans-Asia will purchase all the electricity output of said power facility at an agreed price, subject to certain adjustments.”
The geothermal power venture is under corporate vehicle Maibarara Geothermal Inc. (MGI) which consigns the operatorship to PECR’s subsidiary Petrogreen Energy Corporation with 65-percent stake. Trans-Asia holds 25-percent equity while state-owned Philippine National Oil Company-Renewables Corporation owns the minority stake of 10-percent.
“MGI will sell the entire output of the plant starting in 3rd quarter of 2013, when the power facility is targeted to begin commercial operations,” PetroEnergy Resources said.
The company expounded that the agreed electricity price will cover payments for capacity fee, operations and maintenance fee and annual escalation based on inflation and foreign exchange adjustments.
“The ESA will be subject to review every five years,” it added.
The project sponsors are already moving headway into the venture’s implementation. Previous deals closed had been those on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.
The facility will be among the capacity additions to the Luzon grid coming from conventional renewable energy (RE) resource."

Maibarara Geothermal Facility - Closest Future Geothermal Plant in Manila.

              http://www.flickr.com/photos/stuckincustoms/1286291464

The closest geothermal energy plant in Metro Manila when pursue and finish could be this one, the Maibarara geothermal facility in Laguna. Enthusiasts don’t need to travel very far from the Metro in order to see this geothermal energy project. According to Malaya.com, this Maibarara project is located on the western flank of Mount Makiling, an inactive volcano which is part of the San Pablo volcanic field, also known as the Laguna volcanic field.

Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Co. hold 25% of the project, 65% by PetroGreen Energy Corp. and 10% PNOC-Renewable Energy Corp.

This project is still under exploration stage which includes drilling millions of pesos worth of wells for steam sources that could provide great source of renewable energy power. It may take time before this geothermal plant become operational because drilling for wells will take a lot of time. Drilling wells for very high pressure steam sources is one of the main activities and sometimes the hardest part in developing a successful geothermal plant because electricity produce will depend on the supply of steam coming out from wells.

This can be a very successful project due to its location which is its nearness to Metro Manila.

A Story About Negros Island Geothermal Energy Sources

         wikipedia.org

I really enjoyed it every time I think back that I grow in a community wherein electricity were sourced out from renewable energy. I came from a town named Cauayan from the province of Negros Occidental in the island of Negros on the central part of the Philippines.

The province central icon beside sugarcane is the legendary volcano Mt. Kanlaon. People has lots of stories to tell about Mt. Kanlaon, some are true (sometimes tragic) and the others, legend. But this mysterious volcano is also a symbol of island's economic power and resiliency because it is a huge potential for geothermal energy sources.

This volcanic profile of Negros island has resulted to the development of two geothermal energy plant. The Northern Negros Geothermal Power Plant in Negros Occidental and the Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant in Negros Oriental. This two plants are the major power supplier of electricity of the island.

It is also a pride of the Filipino people because in terms of installed geothermal electricity capacity, the Philippines with a capacity of 1904 MW as of 2010 is on the top 3 globally  together with the United States and Indonesia.

One thing great about geothermal being the source of electricity is that it didn't have any hazardous substance that would directly affect human health, in other words it didn't create pollution and therefore makes people happpy. Another thing is that the sources is renewable - it came from steam underneath the earth's surface.

The Negros island is lucky enough that it have an abundant geothermal energy sources which not just serve as an eco-tourist destination but also gives every Negrosanon a stable power supply.

Good News - More Renewable Energy Projects Plus First Philippine Bio Energy Conference

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lumaxart/2137734236/

Here's two good news on the renewable energy sector and of course to the Filipinos.

First is the announcement of Energy Development Corporation (EDC) at last Thursday's Mindanao Renewable Energy forum its 10 projects lined up for implementation. This is in support on the call for investments on renewable energy projects.

According to the report from sunstar.com, six geothermal projects are set to be established in Surigao del Sur, North Cotabato, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, and Zamboanga del Sur plus wind projects in Surigao del Norte.

This projects will create a savings of $5.8 billion in foreign exchange as it is projected to replace the usage of about 114 million barrels of fuel oil plus the environmental and social benefits that it will bring.

Second great news is the country's first bio energy conference which will assess the current status of the bio energy industry, its relevance to climate change and ecological balance, and business opportunities.

Reports from abs-cbnnews.com states that the conference was dubbed "Be Independent, Go Green Energy," the 1st Philippine Bio Energy Conference which will be held on August 18 to 19 at the Manila Hotel.

The conference aims to help develop a robust, vibrant, and profitable agribusiness sector in the country, said the organizers.

It hopes to encourage more investors to go into agribusiness, biofuel feedstock production and processing, and renewable energy production including biomass feedstock production and biopower generation.
