The Tale of Two Solar Cell Company

Back in 2004, it used to be that the only company that manufactures solar cell in the country was Sunpower. But I was delighted to know (just last week... my information was outdated lol) that on 2008 another company started manufacturing  silicon PV modules in Laguna, Philippines.

It is Solaria, a privately held company. Solaria, according to their website, markets to solar project developers and electric utilities in the decentralized commercial market.

While Sunpower partnered with  Lopez Group's First Philippine Solar for wafer cutting from silicon ingots, Solaria operates locally through contract manufacturer Ionics EMS.

According to Dennis Posadas in one of his 2008 articles on BusinessWeek, he stated that "Having companies like SunPower and Solaria here (Philippines) is one thing; leveraging their presence to jump-start a local solar industry is another. A key opportunity for the Philippines is the fact that a lot of the costs are now in the system integration and installation side of the equation. The costs from the technology, design, and manufacturing of solar panels will eventually be surmounted by competing technologies, but what will lower it further is wide-scale adoption. Here is where the Philippines can play a part."

I agree.

With this renewable energy companies doing business here in our country, it's not a far fetch thing that more renewable energy related business activities will spring up benefiting every Filipinos.
